Class Projects - Homework Assignments
#3 Interior Space Drawing: Do a few "compositional studies" to identify an interesting scene from the art studios, hallways and stairwells of our building. You are to develop a drawing that describes a believable three-dimensional interior space that uses as many of the "Spatial Rendering Devices" we discussed in class as possible. You will be using pencil and graphite sticks to develop lines, textures and tones in your drawing. A good drawing will have a very clear sense of space with interest created by the inclusion of details textures and some dramatic use of shading. Time frame - approximately 1 week.
#2 Landscape Fragment Ink Drawing: Do a few "compositional studies" to isolate an interesting scene for your drawing from the school campus. When you have identified a good composition begin a good, full size version. You may plan out your drawing with pencil, but don't do a full pencil drawing and then ink it in. You are to build your drawing using as wide a vocabulary of marks as possible emphasizing the textures and patterns in your chosen scene. A good finished drawing will have a balance of details and suggested objects, dense areas and open areas, light areas and dark areas. Take your time! A good ink drawing will involve an investment of patient work. Time frame - approximately 1 1/2 weeks. Click here for related art history images.
#1 Small Object Contour Line Drawing: After choosing a small object from the collection provided in class spend time looking at it. Decide what you think is important to describe your object: it's shape?, it's function?, what it's made from? Decide how you will place it in the composition of your drawing. Use line ONLY to describe those aspects you think are important about your object. Lines may be used to define edges, outlines, textures and patterns. DO NOT SHADE. You should use a variety of lines and line qualities in your drawing to keep it interesting. Thin and thick, straight and curving, sketchy and crisp, dark and light etc..Time frame - approximately 3 class periods.
#3: Two Pages: due Mon. October 6, 2008 - Do two full page drawings of "interior spaces". Do one drawing of an interior space in your home emphasizing the sense of space. Do not just do a drawing facing a wall as that will not show much of a sense of space. Do your second "interior space" drawing from a more unusual point of view; looking down a flight of stairs, from inside a closet, from underneath you kitchen table, etc. Try to use some of the artists' "devices" presented in the class demonstration on space. You may use any media that gives you the control you need to show the space you're describing.
#2: One Page: due, Monday September 29, 2008 - One personal landscape drawing built from textural marks (just like our in-class project). Use black ball-point pen, or fine point marker or any media that allows you to develop textures.
#1: One Page: due: Mon. September 15, 2008 -"Good First Page" In your new sketchbook (see the handout you received in class) do a full page drawing or painting about something you like or are interested in. This is just a chance to get your sketchbook started with something personal. You may use any drawing or painting materials you like. Spend at least 45 minutes.
