Class Projects

Five-Value Paintings: Spend some time doing compositional studies to isolate and interesting composition of shapes based on some section of the art room. When you have decided on a composition work it up larger on a piece of bristol board. Then after mixing three shades of gray tempera paint in the tonal sections of your composition. Project Goals: Exercise observational skills, looking for shapes, line, and value. Practice thoughtful composition by specifically locating areas of interest away from the center of the composition.

Signature Self-Portrait: After doing some compositional studies develop a fragment or full face self-portrait using only your signature. You made do some initial planing drawing with pencil that will be erased later. Time frame: 1 week. Examples Gallery

Self-Portrait Studies: From observation in a mirror, do studies of an eye, nose and mouth before doing a whole head study. Work with black charcoal and white pastel to develop the light and shade to create a good sense of form. Time Frame: 1 week.

Signiture Drawings: Begin by signing your name multiple time on a single sheet of paper, after writing you name becomes automatic begin adjusting it's size, direction and density on the page trying to make the move from "writing" to "drawing. Time frame: 1-2 classes.

Contour Line Drawings: Working from observation, without concern for accurate portraiture, draw from observation of your across the table and from yourself in the mirror. Concentrate on observing edges and outlines and allowing your hand to trace those same lines with your pencil and paper.
Project Goals: Exercise observational skills, looking for linear elements. Practice drawing skills, developing an uninhibited connection between our eyes and drawing hand. Time Frame 1-2 classes.
